Most fish that die within the first 3-4 days of introducing them to an aquarium will be as a result of the introduction process.

This is mainly caused by the stress/shock of been introduced to a new environment. So it is very important that you introduce you fish in the correct fashion. 

INTRODUCTION PROCUEDURE
  1. Before even considering introducing new fish test your water quality in case of pollution.
  2. Then before you go to pick new fish, give your existing fish (if any) a feed.
  3. Make sure that you are happy that the fish you are about to purchase is healthy 
  4. A healthy fish will be active in the tank, have good colouration, erect fins, clean scales, clear eyes and should be in good body condition
  5. Try to get back to your tank as soon as possible after the purchase.
  6. When you arrive back turn off the light in the aquarium
  7. Float the bag of fish in the tank but don’t open or pierce the bag at this point.
  8. Floating the bag in the aquarium will adjust the water temperature of the bag to the same temperature of the aquarium
  9. This will reduce the risk of temperature shock.
  10. After 20 minutes open the bag and introduce some water from the tank maybe 2-cup fulls.
  11. Leave the fish in the bag for a further 20 minutes
  12. Repeat step 10.
  13. Wait for a further 20 minutes before letting them out.
  14. This process will help prevent PH and OSMOTIC shock.
  15. Leave the light off for a few hours after the fish are introduced this will further reduce stress on the fish and help them to settle in.
  16. Don’t feed your fish for at least 24 hours
INTRODUCING CICHLIDS OR TERRITORIAL BREEDS

The introduction procedure is the same for every variety of fish.

The only difference with this type of fish is that they are more likely to attack new fish because they instinctivly defend their territory in the aquarium. To prevent this there are a few measures you can take.

  1. It is very important that you feed the existing fish before you introduce the new ones.
  2. Turn off the lights
  3. Rearrange the décor in the tank, this will confuse the existing fish and lead them to believe that they are in new territory. This will help to reduce territorial aggression.
  4. Introduce the new stock in groups of at least 5 – 6
  5. Follow the introduction procedure as normal
  6. But leave the light of for 4 or 5 hours
  7. When you turn on the light wait for 20 minutes and give them a small feed
